"Every
one of us will need assistive technology at some point in our lives. The
Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network is dedicated to increasing
the availability of these devices."
LATAN provides training to elders, family members, care givers, service
providers, and any one else interested in having the opportunity to age
in place and to support others aging in place. The training module and
resource manual is designed as a guide for Louisiana's older citizens
who, as they age, wish to preserve their independence, autonomy, productivity
and dignity. The resource guide and training provide information about
assistive technology (AT), home modifications, and the many service options
available to older people in the communities across Louisiana.
The Assistive Technology for Aging in Place Program identifies agencies,
supportive services, funding options, and resources pertaining to AT that
will help older Louisianans maintain a high quality of life as their health
care and daily living needs change. The Program provides an introduction
into the process of getting needed assistive technology and the training
for using it. It also provides information about resources to make homes
and communities safer and more convenient as age-related changes occur.
In short, this program is designed to assist older persons in their efforts
to include assistive technology in their daily lives.
In this Program, individuals learn that assistive technology can be simple
or complex. It includes Velcro, adapted clothing and toys, canes, jar
openers, adapted eating utensils, shower chairs, computers, seating systems,
scooters, electronic communication systems, hearing aids, glasses, and
thousands of other commercially available items.
