10th Annual Assistive Technology and Universal Design Awards 2007


Nominations are requested for LATAN's 9th Annual Assistive Technology and Universal Design Awards. LATAN will recognize 7 entities, in categories described on the front of this packet, for their work in increasing access to environments for individuals who use assistive technology and/or for expanding the awareness and implementation of universal design to improve access for all.

The following are some examples of how an agency, a business, a citizen, a consumer, a legislator, a media or public relations person, or a LATAN volunteer may have made a significant contribution to increasing access to assistive technology devices or services and/or universal design. Please, indicate on the nomination form if any of the examples applies to the person, business, or agency you are nominating, or specify another. Describe on the form how the change came about.

  Expanding assistive technology access to a new population.
  Expanding types of assistive technology that are funded by an agency or business.
  Revising purchasing policies for electronic communication devices and information dissemination to comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act, and/or WAI web accessibility guidelines.
  Adopting website policy to meet the web accessibility guidelines at http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/ recommended by the Web Accessibility Initiative.
  Starting a new program that includes assistive technology and/or incorporates universal design concepts.
  Including assistive technology/universal access in training programs.
  Hiring someone with experience in assistive devices and/or accessible information technologies.
  Providing assistive technology regularly to students in a regular classroom or rehab clients for work or independent living.
  Nursing home staff recommended assistive technology devices for residents.
  Draft or support legislation for assistive technology access/universal design.
  New money is appropriated for assistive technology devices and services.
  Purchased or donated assistive technology for an individual.
  Supported an individual through the process of acquiring assistive technology.
  Spoke on behalf of an individual to potential funding sources.
  Increased access to assistive technology for independent and community living.
  Provided Funding for assistive technology programs.
  Other law promoting access to assistive technology.
  Promoted the use of assistive technology in the media or other public relations vehicle.
  As a vendor, partnered with LATAN to provide demonstrations of devices.
  Worked with LATAN on a volunteer basis to increase access to assistive technology.
  Other contributions to increasing access to assistive technology devices and services.
