Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What does "refurbished" mean?

"Refurbished" means that the computer is used, but has been checked over to ensure it is in good working condition; some repair or replacement of non-functioning parts may be done.

  2. Is this a desktop or laptop computer?

    It is a desktop computer.

  3. Do you have laptops?

No, we don't always have access to laptops. A few websites you might want to look at for refurbished laptops that LATAN has found, but by no means endorses, are: www.overstock.com, www.usanotebook.com, www.laptopcloseout.com, www.usedlaptops.com, www.laptopoutlet.com, and www.TigerDirect.com.

  4. Does LATAN have a payment installment plan?

No, LATAN is not set up to receive partial payments.

  5. When will I receive my computer?

In approximately two to three weeks after LATAN receives your completed application, signed agreements, and full payment. Anything incomplete will delay the processing of your order.

  6. Does the computer come with a printer?

    No.

  7. How will I get my computer?

Your computer will be delivered straight to your door by Federal Express.

  8. Are flat panel monitors available?

YES! We can now offer flat panel monitors as standard. (3/2010)

  9. If I don't have a printer, how can I get an application?

Call or email LATAN and an application will be mailed to you.

  10. Does LATAN take in used computers?

No, but if it still works, we hope you will create a free account and list it on The AT Marketplace, so others may access it. If the computer does not work, please call Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC) at (225) 379-3577, for information about donating it to be recycled.

Tips for AT Users when purchasing a computer:

  • Most assistive technology software programs need around 512 MB of RAM or less to run, but if you plan on running more than one program at a time, you should look for a computer with at least 1 GB of RAM or more.
  • If you have a vision impairment, you may want to consider getting a larger display if you need to enlarge what is on your computer/laptop screen whether using the built-in Windows accessibility options or an assistive technology software program such as ZoomText, MAGic, or WindowEyes.
  • If you already have assistive technology software programs that are on CDs, please ensure that the computer you choose has a CD or DVD drive so that you can install the software on the computer. Most of the smaller netbooks do NOT have CD or DVD drives.
