IT'S TIME FOR ACTION!!

Facing a loss of $235 million, the Louisiana Department of Health will be forced to drastically reduce or eliminate services for individuals with developmental disabilities, and there is a strong possibility of eliminating inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services altogether! CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY!!

The Louisiana House of Representatives passed a budget bill, HB1, that maintains previous cuts to health and social services, as well as programs for people with disabilities and vulnerable citizens.

An already underfunded and inundated Department of Children and Family (DCFS) Services will not be able to support positions required for disability determinations and placing/monitoring children in need of safe foster care! Also, DCFS could potentially reduce the number of participants receiving SNAP (food stamps) impacting thousands of children and seniors throughout Louisiana!

Vocational Rehabilitation's (VR) faces a budget deficit of approximately $1.3 million. VR will be forced to reduce its scope of services, reduce contracts to providers, and will have to maintain waiting lists currently in place. In 2010, the waiting list to receive VR services was approximately 134 people. Today, there are over 4,000 people with disabilities waiting for services that would support them in employment or school.

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), DCFS, and VR all have matched federal funding that supplements their budgets. When the Louisiana Legislature makes budget cuts to certain services and programs, the loss of funding has a deeper impact because it means a total loss of federal funding as well.

LATAN's $250,000 was supported by the House and was included in HB1. However, a reduction or elimination of funding and services to these agencies impacts LATAN's partners and potential customers! AND, we need to act fast so the Senate will continue supporting LATAN.
